The Carpenter Arrived @ Brutopia

I am posting these detailed photos for Craig who is checking in each day to see the progress on the coffee shop.  He is in Phoenix attending a meeting.

The face being built above the rafters will provide an area for storing paper products.  The yellow beams will be brown tomorrow.

The blue/gray on the ceiling is the new paint.  The walls are the same color but very light. It will all come together once the accent color (burnt red) is added.  I'll keep you posted!

A Car With A Message

I have never been one to put bumper stickers on my car; however, I am intrigued by the messages others put on theirs. This morning as we followed this car up I75, I thought about the words that were facing us: Mercy, Hope, Grace, Faith, Love and Others. Were they intended to serve as a reminder to the person who owned the car, or were they put there for those of us who followed? I hope I can incorporate all of them into my upcoming week. If you and I cross paths, and you notice one or more of the attributes to be missing, would you let me know?

The Pops Concert

Cincinnati lost a great conductor recently when Eric Kunzel passed away.  He came to the city in the mid 60's, and became known for starting the "Pops Series."  I worked in the Symphony office  the months between college graduation and my marriage. It was long enough to gain an appreciatin for the symphony and all the work that goes on behind the scenes. I also learned to appreciate the creativity and energy Eric Kunzel brought to Music Hall.  The young conductor we heard this afternoon worked closely with Eric. He will do a great job filling his shoes, even though they were a very large size.

The Chandelier In Music Hall

Good Music & Good Friends

Arch and Tammy Grieve joined us for the Pops Concert this afternoon.  Arch is an elder at the Beavercreek Christian Church where Howard preached last year.  Tammy teaches high school literature in the Beavercreek area.

Another Photo of Last Night's Program

I told you about the Singer/Songwriter concert that was held at the new Clifton Performance theatre last night. I was looking back over my photos and spotted this one.  This young man was the last to perform. He had a nice voice, and he wrote some interesting songs; however, the fellow on the guitar who accompanied him was an incredible guitarist. I would have loved to listen to him as he played his Spanish-style music.  He will surely make a CD.  I absolutely love to hear a Spanish guitar!

Roses Blooming on November 14

The temperature today had to set a record.  It was 65 degrees in the Queen City.  The evening news painted a different picture for those of you who live on the east coast.  We're sorry  for the dreadful weather you're having. I wish everyone could have passed a rosebush like this one on your way to work this morning.  It was blooming in our neighbor's yard just like it did all summer.

A Night of Original Music

The Clifton Performance Theatre hosted a full house tonight at their Singer/Songwriter program.  Three artists performed their original music, and all of them were exceptionally good.

Carol Brammer is seen here visiting with guests during the intermission.

Chili Recipe

This is a small amount of chili because it came from "Dinners For Two" recipe book.  We got it as a wedding gift forty-two years ago this Wednesday (Nov. 18.) It makes 2 generous servings.

Three-in-one Hamburger Mix

1/2 Cup chopped onions
1 tbsp. butter
2 lbs. ground beef
2/3 cup catsup
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup chopped celery
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tbsp. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vinegar
1/4 tsp. dry mustard

Saute onions, celery in butter.  Brown meat and combine all ingredients. This makes great Sloppy Joes.

Chili

1 1/3 cups Three-in-one Hamburger Mix
1 can kidney beans (including liquid) I use hot chili beans instead
1 cup tomato juice
2-3 tsp. chili powder

The chili is great the next day! It makes 4 cups.

A Wonderful Salad

For those of you who have asked for this salad, here it is.  If you haven't had it, it's worth trying.  It is sweeter than most salads.

3/4 cup dried sweetened cranberries
3/4 cup glazed walnuts
1 can mandarin oranges, drained
3/4 cup blue cheese, crumbled (I often use Feta)
1 avocado, cubed
1 bag fresh spinach & mixed greens

Cranberry or raspberry walnut vinaigrette dressing.

The Dining Room Table Was Full

There was no room at the dining room table for Hannah Draper and me, so we enjoyed eating by the fireplace in the living room.  Hannah is from Indianapolis and is a Junior at the Cincinnati Christian University. She has a lovely diamond ring on her left hand with plans of marrying Carl Wittrig next summer.

Cincinnati Christian University Students

Howard and I enjoy hosting students from the Cincinnati Christian University when our schedules coordinate. Tori Thompson is shown in this photo.  She and Carl Wittrig (far right) are both from Traders Point Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Another View

I walked around the table and got a shot of the rest of the kids who came for dinner.  I had an old-fashioned country meal: beans, cornbread, coleslaw & fried potatoes.  They seemed to enjoy something different.  I don't think the cafeteria at CCU serves country suppers.

Becca @ Aveda's

I was pleasantly surprised with the experience I received this afternoon at Aveda's in Oakley.  I always thought going to a beauty school was a risk I didn't want to take.

This was my first experience to set in a chair while a girl, young enough to be my grandkid, took a pair of scissors and a razor to my hair. I watched closely at first, but I soon realized she knew what she was doing.  I could relax and enjoy the ride.

I got a wash & cut, mini facial, and a neck & shoulder massage all for $17.  That sounds too good to be true, but it wasn't.  I can only recommend one stylist and that's Becca.  She is the only one I know...... she was great!

Brutopia Is Getting A New Image

The painters are getting ready to cover up the aqua 'n orange.  It's a new day for Brutopia, the Brammer coffee shop, and we want it to have a fresh look.  A branding company has been hired to design a logo that will carry the new theme.

When Jason comes home for Christmas, he will paint a mural behind the serving counter.  We can hardly wait!

We select an artist each month to display their work on the long wall inside the coffee shop. I have recently assumed that responsibility, which is one I am delighted to do.  Cincinnati has two large buildings that house artists, and each one has an open house once a month (Pendleton & The Essex bldgs.) I have already met lots of wonderful artists in both of them.

This is an exciting venture for Howard and me.  It gives us an opportunity to become more involved in the Clifton community as well as in the lives of Craig's family.  They live around the corner from us.

A New Image

Howard & Craig are enjoying a morning chat in front of Brutopia even if it is the 10th of November....no coats....no gloves...just hot coffee.

The new stainless steel tables and ebony planters add to the clean, crisp look we are after. This photo doesn't show the bright burnt-red trim on the dential molding, but it gives a nice punch to the subtle gray & slate blue colors.

We are delighted with the new look.  If you are in the city, come by for a latte or the best cappuccino in town! Everything in the shop is organic (coffee, cream, etc.)

The Clifton Lantern Walk

Last night was the annual Clifton Lantern Walk. I was told it was a German tradition. When I asked a walker how many were in the crowd, he estimated four hundred. It was interesting to see how many different kinds of lanterns were being carried by old and young.  There was no generation gap in this crowd.  Little Tikes rode in strollers while dogs followed along on leashes. There was a community spirit that tied this group together. I didn't have a lantern, but I was glad I found my camera in the bottom of my purse!

The Clifton Performance Theatre before the paint went on

This is what the space looked like when the Brammers and Camerons looked at it as a possible home for their Clifton Performance Theatre. It was bleak and dreary. You are seeing it after they devoted hours (and more hours) to cleaning!

Since the space was located on Ludlow (the main street in Clifton), we all agreed it would be the perfect location. It is within a short walking distance from all of our homes.

The theatre is designed for local children as well as adults to have a place to perform for the Clifton community. It will seat approx. sixty-five guests. These small theatres are callede "pocket theatres" in Europe. (Howard & I saw lots of them in Austria.)

It has been open only a matter of weeks, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.  The children have already performed Peter Pan & Alice in Wonderland a couple of times as well as other shows. (They use the European spelling for theatre.)

Getting It Ready

Tajci Cameron is busy painting the theatre steps.  The walls have been painted with a flat red, but the stripes (Howard's suggestion) have not yet been added. You'll see the finished product in the following post.

Tajci is a professional singer from Croatia.  If her life-story were written, it would be a best seller.  You can read more about her on her website @ http://www.idobelieve.com/.  She and our daughter-in-law Carol are partners in this venture.

The New Look

Howard is taking a break  while admiring the finished product. The space had once been a tavern, coffee shop, restaurant and the neighborhood bank's extra office space.  The walls were white, the floor was painted cement and the bathrooms were unmentionable.

The girls gave me the privilege of picking out the color scheme.  As you can see, red was the choice for the walls.  We taped off the stripe and painted them with the same color but a different finish (satin & flat.)  Tajci's husband Matt laid the hardwood floor before removing an interior wall. Craig helped paint and clean.  It was a joint project for both families.

Carol's idea of painting the tin ceiling a metalic gold, was the elegant touch the room needed to sparkle. The satin swags above the windows have all the colors of the theatre in them: lime green, purple, brick red, metalic gold and cream (we used for the woodwork.)

When Howard & I went to Huntingburg, IN, we visited the Touch of Class outlet store and walked out with boxes of goodies for the theatre walls. All the gold items you see came from there at a "give-away" price.  Of course we shopped from the "Clearance" room for most things.  The fact that the clock didn't run once we got it home is the risk you take.  We still came out ahead.

(Who is the kid on the left? It's Sawyer reading a book. He doesn't leave home without one!)

Attention All Crafters!

If you are a crafter and would like to make a business out of it, then Grace Dobush's book Crafty Superstar  would be the perfect place to start.

Grace is a regular customer @ Brutopia (the Brammer Coffee Shop), and she gives it credit for being a place of inspiration for her writing.(She says it herself in the forward...Thanks, Grace.)

You can read more about her book www.craftysupermarket.com.

Denny & Vickie Towles

If you want to provide your out-of-town guests with a great view of Cincinnati plus a nice lunch, then the Rookwood Pottery Restaurant is the place.  It is located in Mt. Adams.

Denny & Vickie Towles drove  from Indianapolis this morning and spent the day with us.  We had a delightful time showing them the city.

There is nothing better than spending a beautiful day with good friends!

Jack Frost Is Coming

With the cool weather we had this summer, our eight window boxes out did themselves. Since I know Jack Frost will be coming soon, I posted a photo of this one so I can come back and look at it when the snow falls.

An Unusual Cottage @ Lakeside, OH

The artist who lives in this cottage was told she could not fill her gutter with soil and put plants in it.  She decided she could if she wanted to, and she did.  This photo proves it!  I wouldn't recommend it, but you have to admit it's different!

Friends Meet Fifty Years Later

It was a treat for my brother, sister and I to drive to Falmouth, Kentucky and reunite with a friend we had not seen in fifty years. She along with her family lived in our rural southern Indiana community back in the 50's. She was the same sweet person we remembered her to be,and her red hair was still natural.

A Visit From the Teletubbies

What would you do if you opened the door on Halloween night and found four Teletubbies begging for treats? I have a hunch you would do the same thing we did....give it to them.  I think Papaw tossed a little extra in their sacks since the one in red was our granddaughter Crosley!

Wanna See A Good Movie?

I'm not a great movie goers, but when one comes along that I like, I have a hard time keeping it to myself. That's what happened when I walked out of our neighborhood theater (The Esquire) the other afternoon after seeing Bright Star. It is the love story of John Keats, the poet.  Okay....so it is a bit of a "girl flick"...I still think you guys would enjoy it.  (The theatres are dark, so if a tear creeps into the corner of your eye, no one will see it.)  Enjoy!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

More gray hair was seen on the campus of The Cincinnati Christian University today than normal.  It was homecoming for most of us, but a special reunion for the class of 1959: their 50th Anniversary. Thanks to Facebook, five of us "friends" decided to meet for lunch today and take a trip down memory lane.

The college served Skyline Chili and Graeter's Ice Cream, but my four friends passed that up and came to my house for salads instead.   I knew they would have second thoughts about missing  the ice cream, so I went to our neighborhood Graeter's early this morning and bought enough black raspberry chocolate chip to make all of us happy.

We licked our spoons and munched on chunks of chocolate while leafing through the 1962-65 Annuals which our friend, Phyllis (Hale) Sewell,  brought. We were all four classmates at the time.

While the pages were a little discolored, and the jackets a bit worn, we had no trouble finding photos of ourselves and the friends who shared the campus with us. We were a family, and the fact that we still get together proves how strong a college bond can be.

Thanks to Linda Weaver, Phyllis (Hale) Sewell, Joan (Bennett) Humphries and Berti (Graham) for making my trip down Memory Lane a memorable one.  I hope we can do it again...sooner than later!

HELP!

I felt real smart about the fact that I remembered how to get into my blog so easily.  Now I feel dumb because I can't remember how to get my photos to leave the camera and jump into this post. I hope I can get help before all the leaves are gone.  Burnet Woods (next to UC's campus) is still beautiful....but not for long.

Howard's Birthday

Happy Birthday Howard

Our dining room table was filled with eight Brammer faces last night as we watched Papaw blow out a cake full of candles. I fixed an old-fashioned meal which consisted of baked Amish hens, mashed potatoes with real butter, broccoli casserole and fried Granny Smith apples.

Since it was Howard's night, he took over the sound system by putting on his favorite 50's & 60's CD's.  He turned the music much louder than we did back then. I knew he was making a statement to the young "whippersnappers" around the table. He's still cool!

Their forks never stopped in midair as they listened to the Platters, Dean Martin and Eddie Fisher, but I could tell they were taking in the new sounds, and from the looks on their faces, they were liking it. "Who is Eddie Fisher," Taylor (age 18) asked. "Yes...and I've never heard of the Platters," said Madeline (age 15).

I think the music showed how large the generation gap was between us, but they had to agree that it was good-sounding music. Craig (age 40) asked, "Dad, do you still have that Marty Robins' record that you played over and over when I was a kid?"  Howard was more than happy to go back to his stash and pull out a Marty Robins CD which he had purchased a few years ago (you never want to be without a Marty Robin's song).  He put it on.  We all listened to Marty sing El Paso before calling it a night.

Happy Birthday Papaw!

Welcome Back

Welcome back to my blog. I have missed being in contact with all of you, and it pleases me when I'm asked, "Are you ever going to get back to blogging again?"  I have been writing a lot, but I've decided I can do both.  I hope to accomplish some artwork in between writing projects during the winter months.

I look forward to our time together through the written word.  For those of you who have encouraged me to get going again, thank you!  I'm glad to be back.
