Happy Birthday Howard
Our dining room table was filled with eight Brammer faces last night as we watched Papaw blow out a cake full of candles. I fixed an old-fashioned meal which consisted of baked Amish hens, mashed potatoes with real butter, broccoli casserole and fried Granny Smith apples.
Since it was Howard's night, he took over the sound system by putting on his favorite 50's & 60's CD's. He turned the music much louder than we did back then. I knew he was making a statement to the young "whippersnappers" around the table. He's still cool!
Their forks never stopped in midair as they listened to the Platters, Dean Martin and Eddie Fisher, but I could tell they were taking in the new sounds, and from the looks on their faces, they were liking it. "Who is Eddie Fisher," Taylor (age 18) asked. "Yes...and I've never heard of the Platters," said Madeline (age 15).
I think the music showed how large the generation gap was between us, but they had to agree that it was good-sounding music. Craig (age 40) asked, "Dad, do you still have that Marty Robins' record that you played over and over when I was a kid?" Howard was more than happy to go back to his stash and pull out a Marty Robins CD which he had purchased a few years ago (you never want to be without a Marty Robin's song). He put it on. We all listened to Marty sing El Paso before calling it a night.
